Along with some depressing news regarding Tyler Matzek, the Braves expand their major league roster by adding a seasoned infielder.

In preparation for their game against the Boston Red Sox this evening, the Atlanta Braves made a few roster announcements on Tuesday.

It’s interesting to note that the organization announced the signing of veteran infielder Brian Anderson. First of all, he’ll report straight to the major league team and be available for tonight’s game in Boston. Additionally, Anderson has a little bit more fascination with the bat than most players who have previously occupied the extremely uncommon “26th-man bench spot,” despite the fact that this may appear to be a move to fill that spot.

To be honest, Anderson hasn’t contributed much at the plate in the last three years, logging just 1,008 plate appearances with the Marlins and Brewers and a.680 OPS.

However, Anderson’s ability to play both infield and outfield could eventually make him a valuable bench piece if the Braves can help him regain some of the value in his bat, as they did for other veterans in the past. He can be utilized as a pinch-hitter or in the event of an injury, at the absolute least.

The Braves placed reliever Tyler Matzek on the 60-day injured list to create space for Anderson. On May 14, Matzek was added back to the disabled list due to inflammation in his left shoulder.

It’s regrettable that he was moved to the 60-day notice even if there hasn’t been any more specific info. It appears he will require a considerable amount of time to regain his full health, at the very least.
