Ryan Flaherty made his exit known.
The head coach of Chicago Cubs, Ryan Flaherty, declared his retirement
Ryan Flaherty has completed a full circle since the Cubs selected him in the first round (2008) out of Vanderbilt (41st overall). (Perhaps a Danby Swanson connection?) That is a supplemental selection; Andrew Cashner was the Cubs’ overall top pick in that particular year.
After playing in the Arizona Fall League in 2010, Flaherty spent four years in the Cubs minor league system before being cut in 2011. He was selected by the Orioles in the Rule 5 Draft.
He spent six years as a backup infielder for Baltimore, one year in Atlanta, and one year in Cleveland. He was the Padres’ development coach and scout from 2019 to 2022. In 2023, he was their bench coach. In 2022, he also served as interim manager in San Diego while Bob Melvin was under COVID-19 protocol. That’s when the picture of him above was taken.
Apart from that, the most interesting thing I can write about him is that he is the brother-in-law of Nick Markakis. The sister of Markakis’ wife is Flaherty’s wife.
Greetings from the Cubs family once again, Ryan Flaherty!
