According to authorities, a dump truck killed the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers on a Florida roadway.
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, an Ohio State graduate and finalist for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, was killed on Saturday morning by a dump truck in South Florida while attempting to cross a roadway on foot, according to authorities.
Haskins, 24, was a reserve last season before re-signing with the Steelers in March.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Haskins was hit by the dump truck while attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 in Broward County, near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The patrol reports that the event was reported just after 6:30 a.m.
He had been walking on the road for inexplicable reasons, according to a news release from the patrol.
Prior to the incident, details of what happened were not readily available. Running back Najee Harris of the Steelers and Haskins has been working out with some teammates in South Florida, according to his Instagram stories.
Members of the league and others expressed their shock after hearing of Haskins’ death.
“I am horrified and at a loss for words,” said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in response to Dwayne Haskins’ untimely death. The team released the comment to the public.
“He was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community,” according to Tomlin, and after coming to Pittsburgh, he quickly joined the Pittsburgh Steelers family. In addition to being a terrific teammate, Dwayne was a great friend to a lot of people. I’m truly inconsolable.
