Backyard ice rinks are banned by the US government.

Compared to December 2022, this December has been very different. Then, the tendency for temperatures was lower than usual. This December has seen temperatures that are roughly nine degrees warmer than average.
“It’s crazy; there’s literally no ice outside,” Nate Aul, a resident of Minneapolis, remarked.
Even though lake ice is scarce, Nate Aul’s yard has one of the few outdoor ice rinks. However, their handmade rink is having trouble remaining frozen.
Aul stated, “You can see the water creeping up on the borders if we put more weight on it.”
According to Aul, the rink was sturdy enough to support more ice skaters and was frozen firm at this time last year.
“There’s not much else to do with the primary school kids when there’s not snow and rinks around Minneapolis to go on,” he added. “You want to get them out and active.”

Meanwhile, Jeff Skogen’s backyard rink in Stillwater has only an inch of ice on it.
“Normally, it would be operational. We usually have a little hockey tournament amongst all of us on Christmas Eve since the whole family is here,” Skogen added.
He has spent the last few years working with T-Rex Rinks.
“Every year, we have to cope with something new,” Nolan Rinta, co-owner of T-Rex Rinks, stated.
The average high in December of last year was 24 degrees. This year, the average high has been forty so far.
“We can install rinks in the ground because the ground isn’t entirely frozen yet, but we need to wait for colder temperatures before we can actually fill the rinks,” Rinta stated.
Rinta believes that more rinks will be operational by January, even if the rink season got off to a late start.
“Unfortunately, patience is essential,” Rinta remarked.
“Although we’re a little let down, there’s not much we can do,” said Skogen.
