The obligatory challenge is coming up, therefore, Fury and Usyk won’t be able to hang onto their four heavyweight world titles for long.
Even though Tyson Fury wins the heavyweight title tonight, he won’t be able to hang onto all four titles for very long.
In Saudi Arabia, Fury will face Oleksandr Usyk in an attempt to become the first absolute ruler since Lennox Lewis in 1999. When only three belts, were up for grabs 25 years ago, the winner would also be the first to hold all four.
However, Filip Hrgovic has long been required to face IBF champion Usyk, therefore he won’t wait for their October rematch. Rather, he will fight Daniel Dubois in June for the vacant title, with the victor facing Anthony Joshua at Wembley in September.
On May 18, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will square off in a major fight that will see both fighters try to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 1999. With the two fighting for the coveted WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF titles, the stakes could not be higher.
Thus, just three titles will be up for grabs when Fury and Usyk square off again in October. The IBF quickly took Fury’s title away after his 2015 victory over Wladimir Klitschko.
Fury had agreed to a rematch clause in his contract with Klitschko, so he was ineligible to face mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Glazkov. Following a drink-and-drug-fueled melancholy, Fury withdrew from the rematch, gave up his other two championships, and left the ring for nearly three years.
In the event that Fury triumphs tonight, he intends to hand over his titles to Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi boxing ringmaster, right away. He remarked, “I genuinely promised His Excellency Turki Alalshikh that I would give him every belt I win as a present.”
“Let’s just be clear, folks. I’ve read a lot of comments from individuals claiming that there are four belts. More than just four belts are at stake. You have Ring Magazine, Lineal, WBO, WBA, WBC, IBO, and IBF. Thus, it is truly seven on the line, for all of you motherf*****s out there who mistakenly believed it to be four.”
After dominating at cruiserweight and challenging Anthony Joshua to a fight in the land of giants, Usyk will look to make history by challenging Anthony Joshua once more. Before defeating Daniel Dubois last August to keep his titles, he defeated the Brit twice.
