Authorities say an Arkansas football player was detained on suspicion of burglary and criminal mischief.
Security footage allowed authorities to confirm that Stewart was in the apartment and then threw the laptop from the apartment garage.
Jashaud Stewart, a defensive end for the Arkansas Razorback football team, was taken into custody in Fayetteville on suspicion of burglary and criminal mischief.
As per the jail records of Washington County, Stewart was booked on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
According to an initial complaint from Washington County, Stewart got into a fight with a woman a few days earlier, on December 10, while travelling to a casino with a group of individuals. According to the report, the event took place inside the car they were driving. Authorities claimed that Stewart was making the woman weep by grabbing her upper right arm and pinching her leg. According to the complaint, the gang chose to order Stewart to “get out” of the car and abandoned him on the side of the road.
Police received a report that the girl’s vehicle had a damaged front windscreen the same day the two parted ways, according to officials. Witnesses, according to officials, said that Stewart had taken the girl’s laptop; shortly after, it was discovered broken in the apartment building’s parking garage. According to witnesses, Stewart entered her flat and stole something, according to the police.
Through the use of CCTV footage, authorities were able to confirm that Stewart had been inside the apartment before hurling the laptop against a block wall and leaving the apartment garage. They were also able to view surveillance footage that showed someone approaching the girl’s car, but the vandalism was hidden by the camera’s perspective. A witness described the suspect’s car as being identical to Stewart’s when it arrived.
When officials saw this, they called Stewart, who, according to the release, “acknowledged there was an incident” on December 10 but would not speak without his attorney. After agreeing to meet with authorities outside his flat, he was then brought to the Washington County jail, according to officials.
The 22-year-old is being charged with one count of first-degree criminal mischief and one count of breaking into a house. He has a hearing at the Washington County Circuit Court on December 15 at 7:45 a.m.
Stewart, a Jonesboro native and senior defensive end, is listed by the Razorbacks. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles in 10 games, six of which he started, during his collegiate campaign.
Stewart finished the season with seven total tackles.
Regarding the arrest, Kyle Parkinson, the university’s associate athletics director for communications, issued the following statement:
We are aware of the problem with Jashaud Stewart. He is on an indefinite leave of absence from the team. We will decide on his future standing with our football programme once we have gathered and examined additional facts.
