Dana White discusses the main event of UFC 300 and discloses that Leon Edwards took on three opponents.

Finally, there will be a main event at UFC 300 on April 13. However,  it’s hard to say if many people anticipated Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill to be the major attraction.

Just after UFC 298 came to a conclusion, UFC CEO Dana White made the unexpected revelation in response to original suspicions that Pereira would defend his light heavyweight title at UFC 301, which would take place in his home country of Brazil in May

    .

Rather, Pereira wins at UFC 300, while Hill makes his first appearance on the scene since he had to give up the light heavyweight belt in 2023 due to a torn Achilles tendon.

Speaking during the main event, White stated that after the promotion looked into a variety of options, the choice to schedule Pereira vs. Hill essentially came down to timing and opportunity. Leon Edwards, the current UFC welterweight champion, was a strong contender to headline the event, he said, and he took every opponent presented to him, but nothing worked out.

“We endeavored to engage in numerous conversations and fights,” White stated during the UFC 298 press conference following the bout. “In our line of work, seizing opportunities is crucial. leading the charge at UFC 300 amid all the excitement and anticipation.

Let me just add that during this whole process, Leon Edwards has faced, like, three opponents. Nobody can say no to Leon Edwards. This child is a true gem. During UFC 300 [conversations], he was thrown against like three opponents—yes, yes, etc. He was ready to face anyone. The kid is such a stud. Leon, many thanks and regards.

Edwards was obviously cut from the program, and White stated that even though he still intends to schedule a bout for UFC 300, it would not feature the welterweight champion defending the title. White couldn’t say enough positive things about “Rocky” after attempting to set him up for a high-profile fight in April. He didn’t disclose the three opponents who were given to Edwards, though.

Regarding Edwards, White remarked, “This guy doesn’t care—he’ll fight anybody.” “Consider this: You’re going to be the main attraction and you’re going to fight this man. We chat about UFC 300 when we phone. We then give you another call and tell you to go fight this guy. Then we call him a third time and switch opponents once more. It’s simply absurd.

This guy doesn’t give a damn. He is eager to take on the task. He’s prepared to battle anyone. It is something I adore and greatly admire.

Regarding the challenges faced in securing the most sought-after UFC 300 main event, White assures that no ludicrous requests for additional cash or other benefits were made in exchange for securing the top spot on April 13.

According to White, the UFC’s largest challenge was to sell so many pay-per-view cards for UFC 298 and UFC 299 that by the time UFC 300 rolled around, the cupboard was almost empty. Fortunately, Hill and Pereira were free and prepared to battle.

White declared, “This was not about money.” “Time was of the essence. We have three straight winning cards, and in this industry, there are injuries and other behind-the-scenes bullshit. We have been discussing 300 for ages. All we wanted to do was get into the best battles we could. We still have two battles to go, so we’re attempting to put on two vicious brawls.

These two men are the best. You saw the video, I’m sure, where I went over each person’s background and identity. The two men are ravenous. Both of them desire it. That fight is awful, no way.”

This will be yet another incredible accomplishment for Pereira, who only had four MMA fights on his record when he joined the UFC less than three years ago. Now, he will be the main attraction on one of the biggest cards in the organization’s history, defending his second divisional title after previously taking home the middleweight gold.

White praised the current UFC light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira, saying, “[Alex Pereira with] how fast he did it, in such a short length of time, in two different weight classes.” The fact that a man from essentially one style was able to achieve what he did here was astounding, especially considering that [Israel Adesanya] did it even faster and in two separate weight classes.

This will be Hill’s first fight since he fought Pereira’s mentor and head coach, Glover Teixeira, in January 2023 to win the light heavyweight title. Although Hill had to give up his title after suffering a torn Achilles tendon, White is confident that “Sweet Dreams” will be more than prepared for UFC 300.

“Kelsey Plum from the WNBA and I are pals; she suffered the same injury as Jamahal Hill,” White remarked. “She returned, won a national title, and was MVP.” He has been attending the Institute for Performance. At the PI, she healed from that wound. Thus, hopefully, he’s okay.
