After worsening a foot injury, Manchester United has confirmed that center-back Lisandro Martinez will miss an “extended period” of time.
After returning to club football, the Argentine international started both matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Bayern Munich after limping off during the 3-1 loss to Arsenal prior to the international break.
Martinez has since missed United’s last two games, and the team has announced he won’t be back for a long.
According to a club statement, “Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for a significant amount of time due to an aggravation of the foot injury he sustained in April.” “It has now been concluded that he need a time of rest and recuperation on the sidelines. Ongoing evaluation will determine the following stages.
Martinez’s 2022–23 season was abruptly ended by a fractured metatarsal in April, but he was back and ready to begin the current season after appearing to shake off the issue.
He will now likely return to the sidelines, which will only make manager Erik ten Hag’s injury problem worse.
After a successful injury return against Burnley and an hour against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, Raphael Varane now appears prepared to replace Martinez for the foreseeable future.
Ten Hag has a choice of Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, or the resurgent Jonny Evans to partner Varane.
Ten Hag is having a left-back issue even though he has enough depth at center back to handle life without Martinez. Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw are both hurt, and loanee Sergio Reguilon has joined them on the operating table. As a result, Sofyan Amrabat was used in the back versus Palace.
