Matt Lodge escapes suspension following his tackle on Smith…
It seems like Matt Lodge got away with what many thought was a dangerous tackle, and there’s been a lot of discussion around it. The whole situation does highlight how complex the rules around tackling are in the NRL, especially with injuries like the one Brandon Smith suffered. I can understand why some people think Lodge should’ve been penalised. The tackle looked pretty awkward, and given how hard these players hit each other, a lot of people are quick to call out what might be seen as a “hip-drop” tackle.
But the fact that both players are close friends and came to each other’s defense shows a lot of sportsmanship. I think the personal connection here is key, and Smith’s backing of Lodge on social media definitely shows there’s no ill intent on either side. Bennett’s frustration is understandable, though, considering the impact of the injury on Souths and Smith’s recovery after such a long time out.
What do you think? Do you believe it was an accidental tackle, or should there have been more scrutiny on the technique?
