Myth Busters today: the Canadiens and Steven Stamkos.
Myth Busters is the one television program that my family misses the most. As they looked at all the potential explanations for popular tales from a scientific standpoint, my kids grew up on it and even fell asleep to it most nights.
Whenever a ridiculous season arrives, a juicy rumor generally follows. However, rumors seldom ever ascend to the mythological heights that this one seems destined to reach.
The Montréal Canadiens are pursuing Steven Stamkos with a massive salary. Because of Martin St. Louis, he is thinking of visiting that place.
This one really has it all.
It makes sense that the iconic Toronto youngster, Steven Stamkos, who won the Stanley Cup while playing for current Montréal Canadiens coach Marty St. Louis, would sign with a team with plenty of space, and the Lightning will have to accept that they can no longer match the offer.
Stephen Stamkos, in the meantime, has stated that he would want to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs ever since he was a young child watching them in Ontario. However, Toronto is constantly up against the cap, and it doesn’t seem like it will be able to change that anytime soon. You have an almost ideal rumor when you combine it with the famous fact that Toronto Maple Leafs fans detest the Montréal Canadiens and are sick to their stomachs thinking about their prodigal son donning that outfit soon.
Truth?
I’ve always maintained that there is always a purpose behind the leaks of rumors. Here, three massive hockey media centers—the Maple Leafs, the Canadiens, and the Canadiens French media—are known for their ability to pick and choose minute details from every statement made by anyone, anywhere, at any time.
Is it even coherent?
In certain respects, absolutely. Marty would be thrilled to have Stammer guide a future Caufield crew member. Furthermore, Montreal has the cap room to put together an offer that is unbeatable by any other team.
Additionally, Steve Stamkos hasn’t received good treatment from Tampa during the “almost non-negotiation” of a new contract. Being a leader, Stephen didn’t make a big deal out of this throughout the season, but he did go out and have a serious season because, once again, that’s the kind of leader he is.
Stephen Stamkos has stated unequivocally in recent years that he intends to stay and retire with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He had every chance to sign in Toronto a few years ago, but it fell through, demonstrating that he is just not going to sign there at Hometown pricing just to claim to have performed there.
Is the myth completely debunked now?
This rumor seems “plausible, leaning towards busted,” I suppose.
The one thing that is constant about TMI, though, is that anything may alter with a phone call. And the Toronto Maple Leafs might have a role in this one, depending on what transpires with Mitch Marner.
