Mike Shildt just made his exit known.
The San Diego Padres manager has announced his resignation.
After signing a two-year contract, Mike Shildt, 55, became the 23rd manager in Padres history. He had served as a senior advisor to the team for the previous two seasons.
At a press conference held at Petco Park on Tuesday afternoon, Shildt made his goals apparent right away.
“I adore our team,” Shildt declared. These young men are amazing and obviously talented. We will work together as an organization to achieve our ultimate goal of winning.
During his first term as a big league captain, Shildt accomplished a lot of things. After working as a coach in the St. Louis system for more than ten years, he was the manager of the Cardinals from 2018 to 21. In addition to making the playoffs in each of his three full seasons, Shildt was awarded the 2019 NL Manager of the Year Award.
General manager A.J. Preller remarked, “Mike Shildt teams are exceptionally prepared and detail-oriented.” “He communicates with players in a very transparent and open manner. The object of the game is to win, and Mike has won a great deal.
Less than a month has passed since former manager Bob Melvin took the San Francisco management position after the Padres allowed him to interview with the Giants. That sparked a four-week procedure that was suspended last week as the company grieved the loss of chairman and owner Peter Seidler. On Friday, owner Eric Kutsenda was named chairman and acting control person.
The Angels’ infield coach Benji Gil, former Angels manager Phil Nevin, and offensive coordinator/bench coach Ryan Flaherty were among the managers the Padres interviewed. The two candidates who were seen as favorites for the position were Shildt and Flaherty; it is yet unknown if Flaherty will stay on the team as Shildt’s assistant.
According to Preller, the hiring process for a coaching team will soon start. Ruben Niebla, who has a contract through 2024, will remain as pitching coach, he just announced. Shildt said, “[The] personnel that I worked with were quite skilled,” but the remainder of the group has not yet been identified. persons of high moral standards, and I would be happy to collaborate with any of them.
As manager of the Padres, Shildt will have to turn around a team that had a poor 2023 season. San Diego finished 82-80 and missed the postseason despite their hopes of winning the World Series.
There will definitely be some changes during the winter, but the Padres’ core is anticipated to stay mostly intact, especially offensively. Having played for the team for the previous two seasons, Shildt is already acquainted with that core.
It is now his responsibility to make the most of it.
Shildt stated, “You have to make sure that they are themselves first and foremost.”. I mean, we have some very great, high-achieving, talented people in this club. I’m eager to collaborate with them to build a framework that will allow them to flourish and to establish accountability that will allow the team as a whole to flourish.
Thus, allow them to be themselves in a group environment. Obtain their support, which shouldn’t be too difficult. These guys are amazing and incredibly hungry. And then let them play happily.
