With the addition of two highly sought-after players this weekend—former Michigan State defensive tackle Derrick Harmon and former Alabama safety Peyton Woodyard—Lanning’s defense gained strength.
Oregon’s transfer class is ranked No. 2 in the nation overall, behind only Ole Miss.
On Sunday, four-star Woodyard revealed that he would be joining the Oregon Ducks football team after leaving the University of Alabama. Three aspects regarding Woodyard’s dedication to Oregon are worth knowing.Woodyards Oregon Trail: History of Georgia and Alabama
In January 2023, Woodyard, a highly-regarded talent from the 2024 class, made his initial commitment to the University of Georgia. In August of that same year, he subsequently renounced his pledge to Alabama. At the All-American Bowl, Woodyard became the first-ever junior to reveal his college choice. At the time, he decided on Georgia.
In December, the defensive back committed to Alabama’s 2024 recruiting class and began his spring semester studies there.
The famed Alabama head coach Nick Saban retired, and the athletic department of Alabama hired Kalen DeBoer, a former head coach of Washington. Woodward signed up early for Alabama and spent the spring working with the team under their new coach, but on April 29th, he went through the transfer portal.
Woodyard had a “do not contact tag” on his listing on the portal, suggesting that the transfer knew where he was going. On Sunday, he declared his intention to play with the Ducks under coach Lanning by transferring. Woodyard still has four years to be eligible.”Man of the year” for the All American Bowl: Woodyard’s prominence in high school
In the 247 Composite rankings, the four-star safety from California came in 101st overall. Additionally, Woodyard was ranked as the ninth safety and the twelfth player from California.
At St. John Bosco High School in 2022, Woodyard had 53 tackles, one interception, and seven pass breakups in his junior year. As a sophomore, he tallied 62 tackles as well. He will reunite with Matayo Uiagalelei, his old teammate at St. John Bosco, at Oregon.
“Recruiting with Andrew Nemec” host Andrew Nemac of ESPN commended Woodyard, saying, “I think he’s the most polished, most interesting young man I’ve interviewed in my career.”
Class No. 2 Transfer: Woodyard Accompanying the Flock
Woodyard was selected for the Polynesian Bowl and the All-American Bowl due to his outstanding athletic performance in high school. He even won “Man of the Year” in the All-American Bowl.
This past weekend, Lanning secured big transfers, bringing in defensive tackle Derrick Harmon from Michigan State on Friday and Woodyard on Saturday.
This offseason, the Ducks have added 14 players from the roster. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel from Oklahoma, former Texas A&M five-star receiver Evan Stewart, and cornerback Jabbar Muhammad are among these additions. Last season, Muhammad helped Washington win the Pac-12 conference and advance to the College Football Playoff championship game. They also signed Dante Moore, a former UCLA five-star recruit and another gifted quarterback.
Together with Woodyard and Harmon, these transfers have given Oregon a great chance to not just compete in the Big Ten but even win it. With their current roster, the Ducks should be strong competitors in their new conference.
