Outstanding: As Raducanu eats up Kerber
In Stuttgart To Record Third Consecutive Clay Win
Emma Raducanu extended her impressive clay court run with a commanding victory over Angelique Kerber, securing her third consecutive win on the surface at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
Although this event marked Raducanu’s debut in a WTA clay tournament, it wasn’t her first clay match this year. Prior to this, she represented Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, where she delivered exceptional performances to defeat Caroline Garcia and Diane Parry. These matches, both lasting three sets, provided valuable clay court practice for Raducanu and contributed to her country’s qualification for the Finals.
Facing a formidable opponent in Kerber, Raducanu appeared remarkably comfortable on the court. While Kerber’s form has dipped since her return from pregnancy, she remained a tough opponent, especially on home soil with the crowd’s support. Despite Kerber’s chances, Raducanu demonstrated clinical play, particularly capitalizing on the German’s second serve with aggressive returns.
The first set saw Raducanu take a commanding lead, winning crucial points and maintaining her composure. Although Kerber had opportunities, she struggled to convert them, leading to a 6-2 scoreline in Raducanu’s favor. In the second set, Raducanu secured an early break, but Kerber quickly responded with a break of her own. However, Raducanu regained control with another break, exploiting Kerber’s vulnerability on her second serve. Kerber’s eight double faults further compounded her challenges, ultimately resulting in Raducanu’s comprehensive 6-2, 6-1 victory and progression to the tournament’s second round.
