Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter is joining in on the fun, taking a jab at the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the teams’ highly anticipated NFC title game rematch on Sunday. First it was edge rusher Haason Reddick, then it was an insane Philadelphia cliché of a man.
Carter took advantage of the opportunity to criticize the Niners team he will be facing most directly when he was questioned about the matchup on Thursday.
Carter stated, “They have a lot of weapons out there on the outside, but I’m inside, in the trenches, and I haven’t heard anything about the o-line.
Carter, who was selected ninth overall in the last round, has every right to be confident. Carter leads the field in tackles, forced fumbles (2), sacks (3), and defensive rookie of the year (DROY) this season.
Despite facing criminal charges for his role in an automobile accident that resulted in the death of a University of Georgia staff member, Carter was chosen by Philadelphia.
It’s also true that San Francisco’s offensive line has been quite mediocre this season, despite the fact that his most recent remarks are sure to irritate Niners supporters (despite the fact that offensive lines generally receive very little discussion from national talking heads). The unit ranks 16th in Pass Block Win Rate and 17th in Run Block Win Rate, placing them squarely in the middle of the league for block efficiency, according to ESPN.
And that’s in spite of the fact that Trent Williams, a future Hall of Famer, is a bragger.Even though Williams is double-teamed on about 40% of plays, ESPN rates him third among all players in terms of pass blocking efficiency.
Williams’ influence is very clear. When he has started, San Francisco is 8-1; however, in the two games he has missed due to ankle injuries, the team has lost.
Carter’s memory of Williams and the rest of San Francisco’s offensive line will be largely shaped by how well they play on Sunday.
