Steelers sign CB Anthony Averett after rookie minicamp
It seems the Pittsburgh Steelers knew they needed more room at cornerback going into rookie minicamp and made the necessary additions.
Anthony Averett, a cornerback, participated in Pittsburgh’s rookie minicamp as a tryout. The team has signed him.
In 2023, Averett was not an NFL player. He last suit up for the Los Vegas Raiders in 2022, appearing in seven games. He was a member of the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2021, when he intercepted three passes in 2021.
In the trade that sent wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, the Steelers acquired Donte Jackson, but they were still lacking in depth at wide receiver. The only other cornerbacks on the roster that could play outside were Cory Trice and Darius Rush. West Virginia native Beanie Bishop was signed as an undrafted free agent, but his position will be as a slot cornerback.
Averett will give the space some excellent depth. In the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Ravens selected him.
