Carson Wentz, a former No. 2 overall choice of the Philadelphia Eagles, reached his zenith in the team’s 2017–18 Super Bowl run. Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report speculated that the Eagles and current quarterback Jalen Hurts might be experiencing a similar situation.

Gagnon compiled a list of recent NFL blockbuster contracts that teams will probably regret on June 19. Hurts’ contract extension with the Eagles was mentioned by Gagnon.

That incredible 2022 season might have been an aberration for a quarterback who wasn’t a major contributor as a rookie, performed mediocrely well in his sophomore year, and returned to earth with an uneven 2024 campaign,” Gagnon said. “It’s possible the league has somewhat figured him out, and we’ve seen the best of him.”

Hurts signed a 5-year, $255 million contract with the Eagles after their Super Bowl appearance in February 2023, with a $179.4 million guarantee.

Hurts had a 2023 season marked by 15 interceptions after placing second for the MVP title in 2022. Along with a decline in his completion %, he also suffered drops in his yards per pass and yards per carry averages.

Hurts struggled last season, and the Eagles fell apart at the end. In 2023, Philadelphia dropped five of its final six games during the regular season. In that time, Hurts averaged just 6.5 yards per pass and had five touchdowns and five interceptions.
