Eagles sign quarterback from the Cowboys.
NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agency quarterback Will Grier to a one-year deal.
Grier’s signing and the trade for Kenny Pickett last Friday mean that in just over a week, there have been two new signal caller additions. The QB Factory continues to grind!
In the 2019 NFL Draft, Grier, 28, was first chosen by the Carolina Panthers with a third-round selection (No. 100 overall). As a rookie, he made his only two starts in his career, both of which ended in defeat. Grier’s completion percentage was only 53.8%, resulting in 4.4 yards per attempt, four interceptions, zero touchdowns, and a 33.2 passer rating. Not too good!
Grier was fired by Carolina after two seasons. The Dallas Cowboys then grabbed him off waivers. Notably, Grier spent two seasons in Texas working alongside Kellen Moore, the new offensive coordinator for the Eagles, and Doug Nussmeier, the new quarterbacks coach. Grier did not play a snap in the regular season and was mostly the backup quarterback to Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
When the Cowboys acquired Trey Lance in late August of last year, it was evident that they were trying to move past Grier. Grier answered with a strong performance in the preseason finale, throwing for 8.7 yards per attempt on 82.9% of his throws, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a passer rating of 122.
Grier played for a while on the practice squads of the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots following his release from Dallas. In the end, he signed off the Pats practice squad to play for the Los Angeles Chargers in mid-December, which put him back together with Moore and Nussmeier.
Grier and the new Eagles coaching staff obviously get along well. Grier can, in theory at least, assist Tanner McKee, Pickett, and Jalen Hurts in acclimating to Philly’s new OC. Grier may also challenge McKee for the starting quarterback position, though McKee ought to be regarded as the clear favorite.
