The offensive coaching staff of the New Orleans Saints is still undergoing changes. According to Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com, Ronald Curry, the quarterback coach for the Saints, will not be a member of the offensive staff in 2024 under new coordinator Klint Kubiak, who was hired recently. Additionally, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Kevin Carberry, the assistant offensive line coach with the Saints, is accepting a job offer from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to become their offensive line coach.
Curry joined the Saints in 2016 and is now 44 years old. Before being elevated to the position of WR coach in 2018, he worked for two years as an offensive assistant under former head coach Sean Payton. He was promoted to QB coach in 2021 after serving in that capacity for two seasons.
The Saints offered Curry the chance to take over as the team’s wideout coach after Kubiak, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN. He turned it down, preferring to start over somewhere else. Curry apparently didn’t have to wait long to receive an offer to join the Buffalo Bills offensive staff on Wednesday morning.
This offseason, Carberry and Curry become the eighth pair of coaches to depart from the New Orleans staff. In January, the team fired senior offensive assistant Bob Bicknell, wide receiver coach Kodi Burns, and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. Joel Thomas, the coach of the running backs, departed at the same time to take a similar job with the New York Giants. Doug Marrone, the offensive line coach, was fired last week.
Last week, it was apparently agreed upon by the Saints and Klint Kubiak, the coordinator of the passing game for the San Francisco 49ers, to take over as offensive coordinator. Kubiak will formally start in the role following this Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII between the 49ers and the Chiefs.
The only members of the offensive staff that are still in place are offensive assistants Kevin Petry and D.J. Williams, assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans, and TE coach Clancy Barone. John Benton is apparently being considered by the Saints to be their potential offensive line coach. It is likely that Kubiak will be involved in the hiring process for the positions of QB coach, WR coach, RB coach, and other staff members.
The previous season, the Saints were ninth in points scored and 14th in total offense. Although they were ranked 21st in rushing yards and 31st in yards per carry, they were 11th in throwing productivity. Despite being held to 20 points or fewer in seven of their first 11 games, New Orleans finished the season with an average of 28.8 points over their final six games.
