REVEALING: MIKE EVANS BAY QB MAKES A SUPRISING STATEMENT ABOUT HIS CO…
Mike Evans Makes Surprising QB Comparison To Baker Mayfield
When Mike Evans mentioned that his Buccaneers teammate and quarterback Baker Mayfield had a playing style akin to another quarterback, it wasn’t the first quarterback that came to mind. Over the years, Evans has played with a variety of quarterbacks including Mike Glennon, Josh McCown, Jameis Winston, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Tom Brady during his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
However, it was surprising to hear Evans draw parallels between Mayfield and another quarterback, let alone assert that their styles of play were similar. The comparison he made for Mayfield was unexpected but understandable after considering his explanation.
During an appearance on a Texas A&M show TexAgs, where he was promoting a golf event near his alma mater for the Mike Evans Family Foundation, Evans discussed his chemistry with Mayfield following a season together. He remarked that Mayfield’s playing style bore resemblance to none other than Johnny Manziel, a fellow Heisman Trophy winner and college teammate of Evans.
“Baker, he surprised me a lot,” Evans said. “With not his game, I knew he was a really good player, just how he is as a leader and a teammate. He really surprised me a lot. He’s similar to Johnny (Manziel), his playing style. I mean, really similar. So it was easy to adjust to play with him.”
Evans’ firsthand experience with both Mayfield and Manziel provides unique insight into their playing styles. Both Mayfield and Manziel are shorter quarterbacks, with Mayfield standing at 6 feet 1 inch and Manziel at 6 feet. Their ability to deliver accurate throws and excel in improvisational situations is a notable aspect of their games.
Manziel, known as “Johnny Football,” had a stellar college career, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2012. He was known for his electrifying style of play, which often saw him turn chaotic moments into big gains on the ground or through the air. Evans played a significant role in Manziel’s success during their time together at Texas A&M.
Ironically, Mayfield also won the Heisman Trophy in 2017 during his tenure at Oklahoma before being drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the first overall pick in 2018. His ability to lead his team to success both through the air and on the ground mirrors some aspects of Manziel’s playing style.
Evans’ praise for Mayfield’s resilience and leadership on the field reflects the impact the quarterback had during his time with the Buccaneers. With both Mayfield and Evans signing new deals this offseason, there is anticipation and excitement surrounding their continued partnership on the field.
