Isaiah Rodgers, suspended for 2023 after breaking the NFL’s gambling policy, signs with the Eagles.
Shortly after reducing the roster to 53 players on Tuesday, Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni addressed the media. The general manager of the Eagles was questioned over the recent signing of Isaiah Rodgers, who broke the NFL’s gambling ban.
The Eagles’ 2023 roster is still being assembled by Howie Roseman, but it looks like he has a head start on the 2024 squad.
Isaiah Rodgers, a cornerback, was suspended by the NFL for at least the 2023 season on June 29 for breaking the gambling policy. The Eagles signed Rodgers on Monday. The Colts released him a few minutes later.
Rodgers was placed on the Reserve Suspended list right away by the Eagles. For the upcoming season, he will not be paid and will not be with the squad. In addition to not counting against the 53-man roster, he will not be included in the Eagles’ modified 2023 salary cap amount of roughly $234.7 million.
After being selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Rodgers agreed to a four-year, $3.44 million contract. His expected salary for this year was $2.7 million.
Rodgers played in 45 games, starting ten, during his three seasons with the Colts. He recovered four fumbles last year and had three interceptions in 2021. In 2020, he also scored a touchdown kickoff return of 101 yards as a rookie.
Among the 82 cornerbacks that saw at least 250 snaps in 2018, Rodgers’ Pro Football Focus grade of 82.1 was tied for fifth-highest. He had the sixth-highest coverage grade of 81.5 and the twentieth-highest run defense mark of 75.5.
The 25-year-old Rodgers was a teammate of current Eagles offensive tackle Jack Driscoll during his time as a college football player at UMass in 2016 and 2017, before Driscoll transferred to Auburn.
THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Outgoing Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson intends to remain in the NFC East. Eric Allen was rejected by the Hall of Fame after just one year as a finalist.
Shortly after the claims became known, Rodgers sent out a tweet apologizing for his behavior.
“In light of the recent reports, I would like to accept full responsibility for my conduct. I’m ready to go above and beyond to make things right since I acknowledge my mistakes. Being a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches, and my teammates was the last thing I ever wanted to do.
I’ve let those I care about down. I committed a mistake of judgment, and I will work diligently to ensure that this process corrects my faults. Playing in the NFL is an honor, and I’ve never taken it lightly. For all of us, I sincerely apologize.
Essentially, Rodgers is an outside corner. Just 31 of the 948 defensive snaps he played over his three years in Indianapolis, according to PFF, were in the slot.
With starting corners Darius Slay and James Bradberry both inking three-year contracts this past offseason, the Eagles’ anticipated cornerback room in 2024 is already expected to be full. They are both contracted for 2025.
The Eagles will retain Josh Jobe’s rights through 2024, while Kelee Ringo’s four-year rookie contract runs through 2026. Eli Ricks, a promising rookie, has a contract through 2025, with the Eagles holding his rights through 2026 if he makes the roster, and slot corner Avonte Maddix has a contract through 2024. Additionally signed through 2024 is Zech McPhearson, who is sidelined for the season due to an Achilles injury.
