SAD NEWS: New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that quarterback Daniel Jones is no longer with the team.
A fair ranking of quarterbacks can be established by comparing them using certain individual performance indicators. Completion percentage, touchdown passes, passing yardage, and other metrics can provide a solid foundation for comparison. Since its introduction in 1973, the NFL quarterback rating, often known as the passer rating, has proven to be a useful statistical analytic tool.
However, these measurements only provide a partial picture. A quarterback’s individual performance must be evaluated within the framework of the era in which he played. For instance, the NFL extended the regular season from 12 to 14 games in 1961 and then raised the number of games from 14 to 16 in 1978. 1978 also saw the implementation of new rules intended to broaden the scope of violations. Even further back, passing statistics were also impacted by modifications to widely employed attacking formations.
It should go without saying that a good football team needs strong leadership from the quarterback position. A few of the Giants’ quarterbacks have not only been excellent players on their own, but they have also guided the team to playoff or championship victories. On the squad, other excellent quarterbacks have not had the same level of success.
The Giants have a lengthy NFL history dating back to 1925. They have won four Super Bowl championships in addition to four NFL titles prior to the Super Bowl. In 25 additional seasons, they have participated in at least one postseason game. Every time this has happened, the coaching staff and the entire team should be credited for the success. For instance, the defense has occasionally been in control. For the Giants, that has really often been the case.
So what is the relationship between the quarterback’s quality and the team’s success? Though it’s undoubtedly not a precise science, I’ve found that, for the most part, the two have gone hand in hand in creating this list.qqqb
Keeping these things in mind, I’ve ranked the top five quarterbacks in Giants history, along with a few deserving candidates. My standards are as follows:
