Daniel Jones is eager to start the 2024 NFL season with the New York Giants once again. Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract before the 2018 season started, but he was unable to show head coach Brian Daboll that he was worthy of it because of his ACL tear.
After getting hurt in the sixth game of the season, Jones won’t be able to participate again until this one. Some believe the Giants erred in giving the quarterback an extension, even though he had not demonstrated much in his first four seasons in the NFL. It was expected that the Giants would select a top-tier quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, despite a largely disappointing campaign.
After failing to close a deal that would have given them the third overall pick with the New England Patriots, it appears the Giants are determined to working with Jones moving ahead. While Jones is aware that there has been talk about the Giants possibly making a change of direction, his recovery is his top priority right now.
“I’m focusing on what I can control, which is preparing to play very well football. So all I really need to do to be ready to go is be well,” Jones said.
With their first-round selection, the Giants selected Malik Nabers, a wide receiver with exceptional promise. This suggests that when he’s ready to get back into practice (he says he’ll be ready for training camp), he should have a more formidable wide receiver group at his disposal.
Jones must get better for the 2024 campaign.
The Giants should have a rather good wide receiver corps with Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Wan’Dale Robins. The Giants’ backups, Isaiah McKenzie, Isaiah Hodgins, and Jalin Hyatt, might offer some depth at the position.
Jones needs to utilize his skill and depth to their fullest. He was at the height of his game following the Giants’ away victory over the Vikings in the Wild Card game following the 2022 season, but other than that one game, he has mostly been mediocre.
Jones completed 317 of 472 passes for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions during the season. He has never even come close to matching the 24 touchdown passes he completed in 2019 as a rookie, at the age of 22.
In 2024, Daniel Jones will most likely need to have his best season to date. If he does not throw at least 20 touchdown passes and the Giants do not return to the NFC playoffs, they will surely need to make a change at quarterback.
It is highly unlikely that six exceptional quarterbacks will be chosen in the top 12 picks of the draft once more if the Giants lose confidence in Jones, which might provide challenges going forward for the team.
In the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Giants selected the former Duke quarterback with the sixth overall pick.
