SAD NEWS: Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields was involved in a horrific accident that resulted in…
Could Justin Fields rank as the second-best quarterback and kickoff returner for the Pittsburgh Steelers? Jaylen Warren, a running back for the Steelers, says he could.
On the same day that the NFL implemented the new kickoff rule, the Steelers signed one of the top return men in the league, Cordarrelle Patterson, and it’s obvious that they intend for Patterson to be their main kickoff returner. Fields may be the other returner on kickoff return teams, which will line up with two returners deep.
Warren indicated he would like to return kickoffs when asked on teammate Cam Heyward’s podcast. He then disclosed that Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith wants to try Fields at returning kickoffs.
Warren remarked, “I would think it’s very exciting – everything starts to happen as soon as you contact the ball.” “Our coordinator for special teams mentioned that Justin Fields was back there…. We gave him a look like, “When will Justin Fields be back there?” It seems cool to me.
Fields has 2,220 rushing yards in his three-year NFL career, so he’s definitely capable of making plays with the ball in his hands. Warren claimed that Fields might be the fastest player on the Steelers. Fields wants to start and returning kickoffs doesn’t help him get closer to that goal. However, if Russell Wilson is starting and Fields can only get on the field by returning kickoffs, then maybe he can succeed. With the new kickoff rule, NFL teams will need to think creatively, and using Fields as a return man would undoubtedly be one of those creative ideas.
