Andy Reid and John Harbaugh have expressed their opposition to the new fair-catch rule.
Though for very different reasons, former and current players, most notably Andy Reid and John Harbaugh, have questioned the NFL’s new fair catch policy for kickoffs.
During this week’s NFL spring meetings in Minneapolis, the competition committee approved a new rule that will be tried for a single season. Kick returners may request a fair catch, regardless of where they caught the ball; if granted, the ball is returned to the 25-yard line. The ball would have been dropped in the claimed spot following a fair catch.
The league’s response to the regulation change, which attempts to improve player safety, has not been kind.It was reported that special teams coaches were united in their condemnation, believing that the strategic element of the game was being lost.
Andy Reid, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, is not a fan, even after his club won the Super Bowl in February.
My concern is “where does it end?” Correct? Reid speaks with Arrowhead Pride. “You begin removing components; let’s watch how this develops. However, you don’t want to remove too many pieces. You’re going to play football with flags.
Reid is not pleased with the persistent decline in the hardness of the game, but Harbaugh did not provide evidence to support his belief that the modification could be more harmful.
During the Ravens’ organized team activities (OTAs), he stated, “We thought there were better ideas,” in his press conference. We got the opportunity to discuss the fair catch rule with every special teams coach.
