SAD NEWS: Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor was involved in an accident that resulted in…
Hendrickson is reportedly “hopeful” to reach an agreement on a long-term deal with the Bengals, so it would be best for all sides if a deal could be reached to retain him in Cincinnati. Hendrickson got a one-year contract extension worth $21 million, including $8 million guaranteed, during the previous summer, keeping him bound to the team until the 2025 campaign.
Although the agreement is a significant increase over the $60 million over four-year contract he signed with the Bengals in 2021, the 29-year-old feels he should be compensated like one of the top defensive ends in the game and is allegedly seeking “more long-term stability” in his next contract. Considering his numbers during his stay in Cincinnati, he might be correct.
GIVEMESPORT Key Stat: Trey Hendrickson is one of just five players in the NFL to record eight or more sacks in each of the previous four seasons, making him one of the most dependable edge rushers since his breakthrough in 2020. Only T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett have more sacks than him in that time frame, with 53 to his credit.
In 2020, Hendrickson’s final season with the New Orleans Saints, he had a breakout year, recording 13.5 sacks, more than double his career total up to that moment. Hendrickson, though, has demonstrated since signing with the Bengals that his 2020 campaign wasn’t a fluke caused by COVID-19.
With 14 sacks in his rookie season in Cincinnati, Hendrickson just beat his previous season’s total. It was a new career high. With just eight sacks in 2022, he showed some regression, but he more than made up for it in 2023. Hendrickson tied for second place in the league with 17.5 sacks, smashing his previous career high set by T.J. Watt.
