NEW DELHI: By agreeing to a contract extension that will keep General Manager Alex Anthopoulos with the six-time NL East champions through the 2031 campaign, the Atlanta Braves have demonstrated their continued commitment to him. The news was made on Friday. Anthopoulos guided the Braves to a World Series victory in 2021 and was instrumental in getting many of the team’s best players long-term contracts.
When Anthopoulos was brought on board in 2017, the Braves were reeling from four straight losing seasons and a scandal involving foreign acquisitions. In 2018, the Braves began an incredible streak of division titles under his direction. The team’s achievements culminated in an incredible 104 wins in the previous season; nevertheless, they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Division Series for the second year running.
“The Braves are a wonderful company to be a part of, and I’m happy with the accomplishments we’ve achieved together,” Anthopoulos said in response to Terry McGuirk, the CEO of the Braves, showing his gratitude for the team’s ongoing support and trust. I am appreciative of the chance to oversee baseball operations going forward and to work toward bringing Atlanta another World Series.”
With the signing of multiyear contracts for important players like Austin Riley, Michael Harris II, Matt Olson, Spencer Strider, Sean Murphy, and NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr., Anthopoulos, 46, has played a crucial role in building a team that is ready for long-term success. Bringing in outfielders Eddie Rosario, Adam Duvall, Joc Pedersen, and Jorge Soler before of the 2021 trade deadline was a smart decision made by the general manager, and it helped the Braves win their first World Series since 1995.
Terry McGuirk, the CEO of the Braves, complimented Anthopoulos’s record of accomplishment and said that the deal gives him the chance to continue putting together teams that are perennial competitors and make long-term decisions. McGuirk expressed complete faith that Anthopoulos will continue to provide Braves fans with championship baseball for a very long time. The original terms of Anthopoulos’s February 2020 contract were meant to last until the 2024 campaign.
