No. 2 Iowa overcame its first loss of the season on Sunday, defeating Drake 113-90 behind the 35 points and 10 assists of Caitlin Clark and the career-high 25 points of Kate Martin.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, it was Clark’s 39th career 30-point game, surpassing Kelsey Plum for the most 30-point games by a player in Division I over the previous 25 seasons.
“I thought we answered pretty well to Coach Bluder’s challenge when we returned to practice following the K-State game,” Clark remarked.
After losing to Kansas State 65-58 on Thursday night, the Hawkeyes (4-1) set a program record in the first half with 64 points, shooting 75% in the first quarter and 65% in the second. Iowa committed 13 turnovers, compared to 27 assists.
“I was grateful that we performed somewhat better than we did on Thursday night,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder remarked. “We got back out there and played Iowa basketball again, with lots of assists and few turnovers.”
The Hawkeyes, according to Bluder, “didn’t get into a groove” during Thursday’s game.
Bluder remarked, “I just felt that we had a lot more enthusiasm out there tonight.” “We were more attentive.”
After having one of her worst shooting nights of her collegiate career, Clark—the current national player of the year and a unanimous choice as an Associated Press preseason All-American—overcame it to make 14 of 22 shots, including 5 of 11 3-pointers. In the game on Thursday, Clark shot just 9 of 32 from the field and 2 of 16 from 3-point range.
“I made a lot of solid threes [against Kansas State], but there were a few bad ones as well,” Clark remarked. “There are nights when they don’t go in sometimes.”
Martin’s change was much more dramatic. In the game on Thursday, she did not score, but in this one, she shot 10 of 12 from the field.
Martin, who made three 3-pointers tonight, her first of the season, remarked, “I kind of shot it with confidence.” “My coaches and teammates had been encouraging me throughout the entire week. Not making a three in the first four games wasn’t enjoyable. I felt relieved that I could take charge tonight and defeat them.”
Bluder remarked, “Kate Martin prepared a special game for us.” “I love to see her play like she performed in the summer.”
Coming off a loss, Drake coach Allison Pohlman was worried that her team was playing the Hawkeyes at an inopportune moment.
“You stated it. She said, “I don’t have to say it.” Captain Obvious is here. It’s the unnoticed problem in the space.”
For the Hawkeyes, Sharon Goodman scored 15 points, while Molly Davis chipped in with 10.
Clark asserted, “You don’t assess a squad in one game, good or terrible.” “We were aware that didn’t accurately reflect who we are.”
For the entire game, the Hawkeyes shot 64%.
With 19 points, Grace Berg topped Drake (3-1).Each of Anna Miller and Katie Dinnebier had fifteen points. Each of Courtney Becker and Taylor McAulay had ten.
