Char-ron Dorsey, the former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman, and accomplished football coach from Florida, has passed away at the age of 46 due to complications arising from a stroke, as confirmed by a fellow coach.
Dorsey, who enjoyed a brief stint in the NFL, transitioning to a successful career as a middle school and high school football coach in his hometown, passed away on Monday, according to Michael Holloway, a longtime coaching colleague, as reported by The Florida Times-Union.
A key figure in the development of young athletes, Dorsey’s impact was acknowledged by Holloway, who mentioned the significant influence Dorsey had on numerous kids striving to reach the next level in their football careers.
Dorsey’s own football journey began at Florida State University, where he played a role in the Seminoles’ national championship team in 1999. After earning All-ACC honors in 2000, he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Although starting in two games for the Cowboys, he was subsequently released and picked up by the Houston Texans.
Facing challenges with his weight during his NFL career, Dorsey addressed the issue and shed 35 pounds upon joining the Texans. Following his departure from the NFL in 2003, he shifted his focus to coaching and played a pivotal role in building a formidable football program at Matthew Gilbert Middle School in Jacksonville.
Dorsey’s coaching legacy extended to Jackson and Parker high schools, where he continued to impact the lives of young players. His dedication to mentoring extended beyond the football field, emphasizing the values of hard work and perseverance to the kids in Jacksonville’s Eastside community.
After a successful coaching career, Dorsey stepped away from coaching last year. His son, C.J. Dorsey, who played under his guidance, now serves as a defensive back at Ferris State University in Michigan. Dorsey’s lasting message to aspiring athletes was encapsulated in the belief that hard work could lead to success, provided one is willing to endure challenges.
