After receiving death threats from her son, Rune’s mother warns the online abuser.
Holger Rune received death threats after losing to Casper Ruud at the 2024 Mexican Open in Acapulco; thus, his mother issued a warning to others not to send them.
Unfortunately, abuse in tennis is nothing new, since players are essentially targeted by abuse on the internet on a daily basis. It gets worse after they lose because the majority of those who fuel that animosity are those who wager money on their victories only to lose in the end.
Rune’s last defeat occurred in the ATP 500 semi-final at the Mexican Open in Acapulco, where he was defeated by Casper Ruud.
Someone was enraged by that, and they launched an attack on Rune, essentially threatening his life. In addition to using profanity and making overt insults, the individual threatened to “teach the young Dane a lesson” and said they were “coming for him.”
Rune was sent a message that simply horrified him, and his mother, Aneke, felt compelled to post it online to highlight the daily struggles that tennis players face.

In response to her son’s death threat on social media, Aneke Rune, his mother, shared a screenshot of the correspondence along with the email address that was used to send it.
Subsequently, she sent a message to the individual, alerting them to the illegality of making death threats and implying that the Dane and his group might pursue legal action.
“Tell this moron that making death threats is against the law, if you know him.”
Celebrities and athletes should always exercise caution, even though others may find it absurd when someone makes an online death threat. This is especially true in light of the events involving Monika Seles many years ago.
That kind of thing hardly ever happens, but some of the abuse that tennis players endure on a regular basis is quite upsetting. It has to stop; it’s too much, but unless law enforcement steps in, it won’t.
