Jeff Van Gundy’s Talks About Worth Jeff Van Gundy’s Celtics Additions
In October, Jeff Van Gundy joined the Boston Celtics as a senior consultant. Drawing from his two decades of NBA experience, his job is to provide advice on all aspects of basketball operations, not just coaching.
In an interview with Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston, Brad Stevens, the president of basketball operations for the Boston Celtics, commended Van Gundy for the contributions he is making to the team leading the NBA with a 41-12 record. Stevens also expressed his admiration for the way the former bench boss of the New York Knicks, who helped lead them to the 1999 Finals, conducts himself.
“This individual acts like an intern at the beginning of his internship, despite having a plethora of information and experience… He is the most modest person you have ever met and is friendly to everyone.
Van Gundy was the head coach of the Houston Rockets and the Knicks in the past. The 62-year-old has an NBA bench coach record of 430-318 throughout his 11 seasons in that role. In the 2000 NBA All-Star Game, he led the Eastern Conference as head coach.
In that role, he assisted in leading the senior U.S. men’s national basketball team to the gold medal in the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup and to the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualification.
