Following the team’s most recent playoff setback, head coach Sheldon Keefe of the Toronto Maple Leafs has been sacked.
The company said in a statement released on Thursday morning that it will start looking for a new head coach right now.
The announcement stated, “Decisions on the remaining coaching staff will follow.”
Following an overtime loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7, the Leafs were eliminated from the NHL playoffs last Saturday in the first round.
“The choice I made today was not easy. The Leafs’ general manager, Brad Treliving, stated, “We felt a new voice was needed to help the team push through to attain our ultimate goal. Sheldon is a terrific coach and a great man.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Sheldon for his tireless efforts and commitment to the organization for the past nine years, and we hope the best for him and his family.
According to the organization, Keefe led the Leafs to a 212-97-40 record in 349 games during the regular season. However, it only finished 16–21 in the postseason, with a 1–5 series record.
The squad had three straight seasons with 100 points or more under Keefe, with the 2021–22 campaign setting a team record with 115 points.
