NFL management sends head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin a memo of punishment
For Adam Peters, the new general manager of the Commanders, this is his first significant action. Additionally, it indicates that all NFL head coaching positions are now filled since Mike McDonald was hired by the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday.
Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, and Pete Carroll are among the notable figures who will have to wait to pursue their next career move because all NFL head coaching positions are already filled.
This cycle, Jim Harbaugh (Los Angeles Chargers) and Raheem Morris (Atlanta Falcons) have been the two most well-known hires.
After holding many interviews with former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and a lengthy list of high-profile candidates, the Falcons made the somewhat surprising decision to hire Morris.
Morris has prior experience with the squad, though, having worked as the team’s defensive coordinator and acting as interim head coach for the last 11 games in 2020. In addition, he held a number of offensive assistant coaching positions in Atlanta from 2015 to 2019.
Since 2021, he has served as the Rams’ defensive coordinator.
Jim Harbaugh was lured by the Chargers from Michigan, and in the process, they acquired maybe the greatest name available.
The Chargers announced on January 24 that Harbaugh will be rejoining the NFL as their coach, just weeks after guiding his alma mater to a national title.
Prior to spending nine seasons as Michigan’s coach, Harbaugh spent four seasons (2011–14) as the 49ers’ coach. The 49ers never finished with a losing record throughout those seasons, winning three NFC title games and a Super Bowl. However, an 8-8 campaign in 2014 and tensions between Harbaugh and the front office contributed to his return to the collegiate level.
Joe Hortiz, the new general manager of the Chargers, will be his partner. Since 2019, Hortiz has been the director of player personnel for the Baltimore Ravens.
In other NFL news, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales was named head coach by the Carolina Panthers on January 25. He will work with Dan Morgan, who was appointed by the Panthers a few days ago as their new general manager and president of football operations. Canales joined Tampa Bay in 2023 after serving as a Seahawks assistant for 13 seasons.
On January 24, the Tennessee Titans announced the hiring of Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, as their new head coach.
After six seasons with the Titans, Mike Vrabel was dismissed; Callahan will take his place. This season, they finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
