Tributes have been paid to an amateur rugby player killed on the field over the weekend.

An amateur rugby player who died over the weekend on the field has received tributes.
After suffering a knock to the head while performing for the Beachlands Maraetai Club in Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday, Cory Heather, a father of three and construction worker, was taken to the hospital and tragically passed away there a few hours later.
He was struck in the head by a falling object, knocking Heather out, and a rescue helicopter was dispatched to the location.
After being transported in critical condition to Auckland City Hospital, the 33-year-old was discovered to have had a significant brain injury. Later on Sunday night, he passed away in the company of his loved ones.
Beachlands homeowner Gareth Price described what happened to the New Zealand website Stuff. saying, “He had caught the ball upright.” Someone approached and gave him a tackle. It was a good, hard tackle and a good, hard game; there was no malice in it.
“Until they began performing CPR, we were unaware of how serious the situation was, and we thought, ‘What the hell is happening?'”
“When you see CPR, you know it’s serious.”
President James Gemmell of Beachlands Rugby Club released a statement saying, “Cory was a much-loved member of the Club, the Senior Under 85kg team, and the wider community.”
“The loss of Cory has left the club in shock. We love and support his teammates, friends, and family.
“We understand the accident will have been traumatic for many involved, including the opposition, match officials, and spectators.”
Mark Robinson, the CEO of the New Zealand Rugby Union, also expressed the “deepest condolences” of the organization.
In a statement, he stated, “Please know that all of New Zealand Rugby is with you.”
To help Heather’s partner, Rachel, and his three kids, a campaign has been put up on the Givealittle website.
As of the time of writing, more than $137,000 has been raised.
“During a rugby match on Saturday, April 27, Cory Heather suffered catastrophic head damage. Cory tragically died unexpectedly on Sunday night while surrounded by his family and friends, according to the appeal.
“A treasured friend to countless people, a devoted partner to Rachel, and a hands-on father to his three children, Stevie (age 5), Benji (age 4), and Louie (age 1.” A wonderful person who lived an extraordinary life and will be sadly missed. Fly high, Cory; you have our undying affection.
“If you are willing and able to support us, we would appreciate donations for Rachel and her children during this heartbreaking time.”
