NFL Coaches and Executives React to the Possible Hiring of a Head Coach for the Colts
GettyThe Indianapolis Colts sacked head coach Frank Reich on November 7 and replaced him with ESPN pundit Jeff Saturday.
The media had a day to react to the Indianapolis Colts’ announcement that they were firing Frank Reich and installing TV analyst Jeff Saturday as the team’s interim head coach. In the NFL, executives and coaches are switching jobs more regularly.
They are just as surprised and “bewildered” as the media who follow the Colts as a whole.
“It’s an incredibly clever move to [crap] on an entire industry of coaches,” a league source texted senior writer Matt Lombardo following Indianapolis’ appointment as the team’s interim head coach on Saturday.having several coaches working for your organization. It was a wise choice to go with a man who has never coached at any level.
Colts Select Saturday vs. Other Eligible Staff Candidates
Saturday praised the Colts coaching staff as he opened his first press conference. For a man who had convinced himself he had to win over the Indianapolis locker room, that was a smart move.
Even yet, given how good the Colts coaching staff is, it’s surprising that owner Jim Irsay named a TV commentator as the team’s temporary head coach.
Indianapolis is led by two former head coaches, Gus Bradley and John Fox. Despite the fact that Fox won 133 games as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Chicago Bears, Bradley has one of the lowest winning percentages of any head coach in NFL history.
Bradley probably wouldn’t have been the best choice for the promotion if he hadn’t been calling defense plays. His squad was doing a great job, so there was no need to step in.
