Edmonton Oilers Head Coach Kris Knoblauch Resigns After Allegations of Racism.
The Oilersreleased a statement saying Kris handed in a letter of resignation to general manager Brad Treliving
Bill Peters is leaving the Calgary Flames organization with immediate effect, the team announced.
Treliving announced associate coach Geoff Ward will serve as acting head coach in an interim capacity at a press conference on Friday. Additionally, he stated that throughout the Flames’ probe into Peters’ claims, the team maintained “quite regular” communication with the National Hockey League.
Following an accusation by a former player that Peters had made racial remarks about him, the coach resigned. Akim Aliu, a former NHL winger who was born in Nigeria, accused Peters of using the n-word against him during his time as the coach of the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs in a series of tweets on Monday night. After that, he left as if nothing had occurred. The room fell silent, to the point that you could hear a pin drop. I said nothing as I simply sat down in my stall.
According to TSN, two of Aliu’s Rockford teammates corroborated the story. According to Aliu, the team captain addressed Peters about the event. However, when Peters summoned Aliu to his office to talk about it, Peters again called Aliu’s music selection “n—– s—” and instructed him to play other music.
Former Hurricanes defenseman Michal Jordán accused Peters of physical abuse on Tuesday in response to Aliu’s claims. Jordán said in a series of tweets that during a game, Peters kicked him and hit an unidentified player in the head.
The Flames’ Wednesday game against Buffalo was without Peters as the team conducted an investigation into the incident. He left Aliu’s name out of the letter. In a statement issued on Thursday, Aliu referred to Peters’s apologies as deceptive and hollow.
Peters departed Rockford to join the Red Wings as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock. Before quitting, he led the Hurricanes for four seasons after taking over as head coach in 2014. Before the 2018–19 season, he joined Calgary, where he helped the team win the Pacific Division even though they lost in the opening round of the playoffs.
