Sherrone Moore, the Wolves head coach, had a drowning accident.
According to reports, Mallett was swimming when rip currents began to make it difficult for him to reach land. He was not breathing when he was eventually taken out of the water, and the doctors declared him dead. He was only thirty-five.
Mallett was one of Michigan’s first significant five-star recruits at the time that recruiting services were beginning to become commonplace in college football. When the 6-7 quarterback committed to Lloyd Carr and the Wolverines, he was much sought after due to his enormous arm. Mallett moved to Arkansas after Rich Rodriguez assumed leadership and announced his intention to use a quarterback that was smaller and more athletic. Mallett had 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns against just 19 interceptions during his time with the Razorbacks. Mallett finished 3-5 as a starter in 21 NFL games, completing 1,835 passing yards, nine touchdown passes, and ten interceptions. He was a player for the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans as well. Tom Brady expressed his sentiments and opinions about his old colleague on Instagram.
“A magnificent man passed away. Ryan, thank you so much for everything,” Brady wrote. “Tonight, I’m praying for the Mallett family and all of their loved ones.”
Mallett had retired from playing and was now content to work as a coach and teacher. He taught physical education and health in addition to serving as the head football coach for the White Hall High School Bulldogs in White Hall, Arkansas.
