Zac Taylor, Bengals head coach, was caught conducting.
Hiring NFL coaches may eventually come down to personal connections. However, Justin Rascati, the new offensive pass game coordinator, was unfamiliar with any Cincinnati Bengals players.
Rascati had no contact with Bengals head coach Zac Taylor or any other team members during his previous stops with the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
His one and only link was to the city where the Bengals are situated, not the team itself.
According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Rascati and his spouse have close acquaintances in Cincinnati, so they have a comfortable place to go when they move for a new opportunity.
“Rascati’s wife, Jennifer, is from Louisville, where he began his undergraduate career. They have close friends that reside on Cincinnati’s east side. In the background of a phone conversation on Friday, Rascati’s three boys, Rhett, Rhys, and Riley, could be heard as he juggled selling his property, starting a new job, and making the move his family and his career path had long anticipated would happen.” Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic.
Although welcoming faces in a foreign land are always a good thing, Rascati wouldn’t be traveling to Cincinnati if he didn’t also mesh well with the Bengals’ goals.
Taylor never worked with Kevin O’Connell, the head coach of the Vikings, but the two had previously studied under Sean McVay, the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. While working under O’Connell in Minnesota, Rascati became acquainted with McVay’s systems and philosophies, which were similar to early versions of their own offensive plans.
The Bengals are looking to use play action and go under center more frequently in the passing game, and Rascati’s return to his roots gives him more confidence.
Regarding Rascati’s familiarity with the Rams’ system, Taylor remarked, “It’s a repeat of all the things I used to do when I was in L.A. five years ago.” “And an excellent reminder of some things we can now repeat.”
The Bengals still need to evolve into an attack that is more varied and exciting. Rascati’s experience is going to be essential to its success.
