SAD NEWS: Buccaneers owner Joel Glazer just announced that head coach Todd Bowles is leaving the team because to…
Following Warrington’s most recent loss, it was looking more and more likely that Daryl Powell would not be coaching the Wolves for much longer. It seemed inevitable that Powell wouldn’t make it if the Wire fell to the worst team in the Super League. The way the loss had happened, it was virtually a given.
Warrington’s announcement that he was leaving after barely four hours was hardly shocking. Powell’s time was ended, which was quite disappointing. Though Powell won’t see it that way, you can say he’s been freed from his pain.
Powell said something in his final interview as the team’s head coach that really stood out. He delivered a critical assessment of his own team, admitting that he could not instill accountability and destroy the players’ lingering sense of entitlement.
“I really think that we can’t take a slap on the chin from someone who says our work isn’t good enough,” he said. “Some squad members don’t seem to accept that enough, in my opinion. There are honorable, good men who are self-critical. Others need to get better. As your coach, I have to acknowledge that many of the people who see you, including myself, will judge you when you go out. Once you fix the problem, it no longer occurs.
It was aimed at them along with the harsh criticism that some of his teammates weren’t striving hard enough. Looking back, one wonders if Powell knew what was ahead. After making a comment like that, it would have been challenging to make amends with them.
