Mike Tomlin timeouts hurt the Steelers-Colts game. Below the wagerers…
Revised 21 January, 2024, at 10:10 p.m. ET
With just over two minutes remaining in the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Indianapolis Colts NFL game, the underdogs were relieved when Colts kicker Matt Gay struck the right upright on a 43-yard field goal attempt.
The miss maintained Indianapolis’ advantage at 27–13, and the over/under closed at 41.5.
But the relief for Under bettors was fleeting, as with 48 seconds remaining, Gay made a 42-yard field goal to seal the 30-13 victory. Pittsburgh’s hopes of making the playoffs were seriously hurt by the loss (7-7).
Underbettors might hold Steelers coach Mike Tomlin accountable for the outcome.
With 1:42 remaining, Pittsburgh gave up the ball on downs at the Indianapolis 25 following Gay’s miss.
The Colts took a knee on first down and decided to run out of time.
Tomlin called for a timeout rather than allowing Indianapolis to run the clock out.
After Indianapolis set up in their standard configuration and executed a play for a brief gain, Tomlin signaled for his last timeout.
Gay’s field goal put the Colts ahead 41.5 (43 overall points) after they ran one more play.
Hurt.
