The current US Open champion, Coco Gauff, recently looked back thanks to a kind fan who unearthed a unique memory from her early years. Posting a photo on her official Instagram account, Gauff happily reminisced about watching tennis legend Venus Williams play Bethanie Mattek-Sands at the US Open in 2012.
The adorable photo captured a little Gauff soaking in the atmosphere created by the fans during Williams’ first-round match. She had no idea that eleven years later, she would take home the coveted championship herself, and that seven years later, she would be fighting against her idol on the court.
Resharing the photo on her Instagram account, Gauff expressed her satisfaction and appreciation for the discovery.
“Right now, I’m watching Venus in the US Open. was unaware that I had been seen on TV in the stands. Whoever found this, you have my sincerest congratulations. OBSCENE IS THIS. Time flies by. Without a doubt, I looked at the Jumbotron to see whether they were filming me. Thank you for sharing.
It’s no secret that Gauff admires Williams; the star has long been known as her influence, both on and off the court. Following her historic victory over Williams at Wimbledon 2019, Gauff was candid about the lessons she learned from the legendary WTA player.
Gauff said, “She [Venus] taught me the value of enjoying life to the fullest outside of tennis, the value of expressing your thoughts on the court, and the virtue of humility.”
