The NFL owners began their fall meetings on Tuesday in New York, and New York Giants owner John Mara was a popular figure among the assembled media.
One of the more influential owners in the league, Mara also co-owns a franchise that is struggling — still. And he had some pointed comments for his team’s biggest star.
‘More playing, less talking’
When Mara was first asked about the much-discussed interview that wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. gave earlier this month, in which he criticized the Giants’ offense and heart, she said, “Which one of his interviews?”
After the interview aired, he said that he did not communicate with Beckham because “enough people have spoken” to the three-time Pro Bowler regarding his remarks.
Further, Odell Beckham Jr. has to play a little bit more and talk a little bit less, according to John Mara.#Giants

Mara did, however, make one specific remark: “He needs to play a little more and talk a little less.” In addition, he expressed his desire for “his play on the field to garner more attention than his words and deeds off the field.”
“It’s not only him.”
For the second consecutive year, the Giants have lost their first six games, going 1-5. “I’m sick about it; it’s pretty disappointing,” Mara remarked.
However, he also stood up for the veteran quarterback on his team.
“I get that Eli Manning is the target at the moment, but when you’re 1–5, a lot of individuals need to step up their game. It’s not only him,” Mara remarked.
“I know (Eli Manning) is the punching bag right now, but a lot of guys need to play better when you’re 1–5,” said Giants owner John Mara during the owners meeting in New York City. It’s not only him.

Mara did, however, express confidence in the ability of general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur to turn things around for the Giants.
He is currently “embarrassed” by his team’s record, though.
