Former Detroit Lions CB among six killed in Houston car wreck

Multiple sources state that D.J. Hayden, a former NFL cornerback, was one of the six people who died in a multiple-car incident in Houston on Saturday morning. Hayden, Zach McMillian, and Ralph Oragwu, his former University of Houston teammates, were killed in an accident involving a car that ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. Hayden was thirty-three.

The driver who ran the red light and caused the crash was pronounced dead at the scene, according to The Houston Chronicle. Four people died at the accident scene, according to the police, and two more people passed away after being taken to the hospital.

The old Oakland Raiders selected Hayden with the 12th overall choice in the 2013 NFL Draft. In 2017, Hayden signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions, following four seasons with Oakland. He was the third cornerback for the Lions that season, behind Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson, after the team’s training camp.

Hayden had 44 tackles in his one and only season with the Lions. He also recovered two fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown on Nov. 19, 2017, in a Week 11 victory against the Chicago Bears.

Hayden also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Washington Football Team, in addition to the Raiders and Lions.
