In the lead-up to Sunday’s Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes would like not to be compared to the late, great NFL quarterback Tom Brady.
AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, 28, hopes to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times when the team plays the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
The Chiefs could become the first club to win two straight Super Bowls since the Brady-inspired New England Patriots in 2005. The Chiefs have won two of the previous four Super Bowls.
Mahomes is not yet prepared to be ranked among the greats of the game, while Brady retired a year ago after winning seven rings.
“I haven’t put a lot of thought into it, because I’m not even close to half there,” the Chiefs quarterback stated.
“Your objective is to become the best player you can be, and I consider myself fortunate to be surrounded by many excellent players.
“At the moment, my goal is to win a third ring by doing everything in my power to defeat a formidable 49ers team.
“I’ll see if I can get to seven in around fifteen years, but seven feels like a long way off.
“I’m going to attempt to see if I can do it too, although fifteen years sounds like a long time. Brady accomplished it, and some other guys have too.”
“I don’t want to play until I am harming the team, so if I can go out there and have some success and still love it every single day, that’s the greatest thing,” the two-time Super Bowl MVP continued.
“Taking care of your body is a lot of work; it involves eating right, trying to lose the dad bod I have, and just doing everything you can to be healthy so you can play at your best level.”
The Texans are still upset about Brady’s masterminding of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2021 triumph over Mahomes and the Chiefs.
“I know how hard that stings, having lost a Super Bowl,” he continued.
“I’m nearly more dependent on avoiding that emotion than I am on raising the trophy.”
