Hobson followed a career in professional baseball after graduating from college, playing with the Cleveland Indians for five years. After that, he moved back to the Tuscaloosa region, where he worked as a principal, football coach, and teacher in West Alabama schools.
In 1997–2001, he was a member of the Tuscaloosa City Council.
As an athlete, his son Butch continued his father’s legacy as a quarterback in football and a third baseman in baseball. After that, he played major league baseball for the Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and New York Yankees. He also managed the Red Sox for a while.
