SOBBER: A former Alabama star and legend dies due too…

At the age of 93, Clell Hobson Sr., a former standout player for the University of Alabama in baseball and football during the 1950s, passed away on Thursday. As to the archives of the Bryant Museum, he was the senior Crimson Tide football player still alive.
Born in Tuscaloosa on November 28, 1930, Hobson attended local schools and was awarded scholarships at Alabama for both baseball and football. In the 1953 Orange Bowl, Hobson led Alabama to a 61-6 thumping of Syracuse. In 1951, Hobson achieved the nation’s second-highest passing percentage. Clell became the fourth player in Bama history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark during his tenure at the Capstone. The national “back of the week” selection went to Hobson in 1952, when Barna upset No. 1 Maryland 27-7. Hobson, who was also a superb baseball player, played with the Cleveland Indians for five years.

Up until 2008, the 61-6 victory over Syracuse set an NCAA record for the biggest victory margin in a bowl game. The Alabama Bowl record for margin of victory is 55 points.

From 1949 to the 1953 Orange Bowl, he started his last two seasons as a quarterback.

Hobson followed a career in professional baseball after graduating from college, playing with the Cleveland Indians for five years. After that, he moved back to the Tuscaloosa region, where he worked as a principal, football coach, and teacher in West Alabama schools.

In 1997–2001, he was a member of the Tuscaloosa City Council.

As an athlete, his son Butch continued his father’s legacy as a quarterback in football and a third baseman in baseball. After that, he played major league baseball for the Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and New York Yankees. He also managed the Red Sox for a while.
