long-term agreement. After three years as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach, Flores was leaving the position. As the season was coming to an end, he was let go despite having consecutive winning seasons. Mike Tomlin, the head coach, was shocked that so many teams were prepared to pass on Flores, a competent and experienced leader. He was later hired by the Steelers to teach their linebackers, and he had an instant and remarkable impact.
Naturally, as the season was coming to an end, a few teams expressed interest. In the end, Flores decided to join the Minnesota Vikings as their defensive coordinator. The Steelers appointed Aaron Curry as their inside linebackers coach after he left. Curry undoubtedly has large shoes to fill.
Curry’s career in the NFL wasn’t without its challenges as a player. The Seattle Seahawks selected the highly skilled linebacker from Wake Forest University fourth overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. After four comparatively uneventful years, he was widely considered a bust. Curry was traded by the Seahawks in 2011 to the Oakland Raiders, who later removed him from their roster in November of 2012. Though he maintained a positive attitude, his playing career ended when he was cut by the New York Giants during training camp in 2013.
After accepting a graduate assistantship in strength and conditioning at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2014, Curry went on to be employed full-time as the defensive line coach for the following four seasons. He coached Larry Ogunjobi and Alex Highsmith while he was in Charlotte, and he will be getting back together with them both in Pittsburgh. In the end, his coaching background brought him back to the NFL in 2019—this time with the Seattle Seahawks, where his career began. He played a variety of defensive roles in Seattle. Coach Tomlin was impressed by his experience, which led to his selection as the inside linebackers coach.
Curry offers Pittsburgh a distinct viewpoint. He’s discovered exactly what it takes and doesn’t take to succeed in the NFL from his career’s ups and downs. Regretfully, he had to learn the hard way. He gave a speech about his experience and how it benefits him as a coach after this year’s minicamp.
