The Detroit Red Wings Stadium Mat Luff Regarding Waivers
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Detroit Red Wings have placed forward Matt Luff on waivers with the intention of reassigning him to their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. Luff signed a $775K, one-year contract with the Red Wings during the offseason, but he hasn’t played for the team yet this year due to an injury he sustained during training camp.
Considering Luff’s history of injuries for the majority of the regular season, it’s highly likely that he will clear waivers and head straight to Grand Rapids. Luff played in almost 20 games for Detroit the previous season, but he’ll have a much harder time breaking into the Red Wings lineup this time around.
Luff was a depth player for Detroit in the 19 games the previous season, averaging just under 10 minutes of ice time per contest while tallying two goals and four points total. Luff played 28 games with the Griffins of the AHL last season, sharing sixth place on the club in scoring with eight goals and 25 points.
Grand Rapids is in the thick of a fiercely contested Central Division playoff chase after enjoying one of their stronger seasons in recent years. Luff’s scoring prowess in the AHL, where he now ranks 24th in the league in goals, should help the Griffins strengthen a particular area of their roster.
