Missouri Youth Football Coach Claims He Was Shot by Parent Due to Son’s Playing Time
On Tuesday night at practice, a parent who was apparently upset that his son wasn’t receiving enough playing time shot four times at the youth football coach in St. Louis.
Shaquille Latimore is in critical but stable condition following surgery following the attack. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the parent, identified as Daryl Clemmons, had challenged the volunteer coach a few weeks prior about his son’s lack of starting status. Latimore’s account was verified by St. Louis police for USA TODAY.
Latimore said that Clemmons had his back to the coach and kept reaching inside a pocket of his sweatsuit. Subsequently, Latimore was shot in the abdomen, back, arm, and leg.
When Clemmons turned himself in to the police on Wednesday, he was accused of armed criminal action and first-degree assault.
Latimore offered to coach the 9- and 10-year-old St. Louis BadBoyz recreational league squad as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator. Latimore, who coached the youth squad alongside his cousin, was a football player at Vashon High School in St. Louis.
According to Latimore’s mother, SeMiko, he is grateful to be alive. Naturally, he is a little teary-eyed, but otherwise, he seems happy.
Latimore’s medical expenditures are currently being paid for by the family through fundraising efforts.
