On Wednesday, Deontae Armstrong signed his letter of intent, giving the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offensive line some much-needed reinforcement.
The offensive line of the Ohio State Buckeyes has gained another important member.
Early on Wednesday morning, Deontae Armstrong, a three-star offensive tackle, committed to the Buckeyes as the third offensive lineman to do so.
The native of Lakewood, Ohio, attended St. Edward High School, where he earlier this year won the 2023 Division 1 Football State Championship. Among other schools, Michigan and Penn State extended offers to Armstrong, who was a highly sought-after recruit.
This season, Ohio State’s offensive line has been under fire for a number of unsteady outings, notably the season opener against Indiana and the season finale against then-No. 3 Michigan. Although it wasn’t at its best in those games, the Buckeyes offensive line was partially to blame for their below-average performance against the Hoosiers and loss to the Wolverines.
Armstrong enters the picture at a time when departing senior leaders Josh Fryar (graduation) and Jakob James (transfer portal). During offseason camp and the upcoming season, Armstrong might be one of the young leaders who establishes himself as a voice in the position room.
Armstrong is exactly half an inch shy of six feet six inches tall and weighs 270 pounds. Armstrong is one of the lighter players on the Ohio State offensive line based on these stats, but that will undoubtedly change once he gets to Columbus.
The speed with which Armstrong plays the game is something that Justin Frye, the offensive line coach for the Buckeyes, hopes will never change. Armstrong makes up for any potential physical shortfall (for the time being) against other college linemen by outmuscleing them at the line of scrimmage.
