In order to get ready for his rescheduled heavyweight title fight against Oleksandr Usyk on May 1, Tyson Fury has invited his father, John, to his training camp.
Tyson Fury has unveiled his “secret weapon” for the rescheduled, undisputed bout against Oleksandr Usyk, his father.
The WBC heavyweight champion was initially slated to face Usyk in February but had to withdraw two weeks beforehand due to a sparring-induced cut. The highly anticipated clash, which will determine the first-ever four-belt heavyweight champion, is now scheduled for May 18 in Saudi Arabia.
After originally planning to train in the Middle East until his injury, Fury opted to remain in Morecambe for the rescheduled match, enlisting the support of his outspoken father, John, in his training team. This will mark Fury’s first fight since his triumph over former UFC champion Francis Ngannou in October.
At a pre-fight press conference, Fury stated, “I am training hard, obviously,” according to the Mirror. “Obviously, I am in great shape, and I have a big fight coming up. There’s no room for error; I’ve just got to get through it, and I’m feeling fantastic with 40 days to go. I have no complaints; I’m working very hard.
“I’ve brought my dad into camp this time; I’ve got my secret weapon. All the boys and girls are in camp; I’ve got the full circus in camp.”
Fury faced criticism for withdrawing from the February bout, with Usyk’s team suggesting he should retire. However, Fury views the postponement as a blessing in disguise. He believes he will demonstrate superiority over former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk, who boasts two victories over Anthony Joshua.
“I was down for the first day or so, but then I realized God’s timing is perfect. It wasn’t my time then, but it will be my time on May 18. I’m the best; I’m just defending my best against him,” Fury remarked.
“This is show business; this is entertainment. If they don’t talk about what’s going on, then people lose interest, so they’ve got to talk smack. If you don’t talk smack in this game, then you ain’t going to make it. When they notice you, then you can show them your skills.
“This is not personal between us; it’s strictly business,” Fury emphasized. “There’s a lot on the line, but I don’t hate him, and he doesn’t hate me. Anyone has to respect his achievements, and I have a tough task in front of me.
“Please don’t say he’s inadequate after I defeat him, but my personal view is that we have weight divisions for a reason, and when the cruiserweights step up to the big boys, they get defeated. You can defeat the average big ones, but you can’t defeat the elite big ones because size really matters, and he’s going to be found wanting against me.”
