This week, in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, former NFL MVP quarterback Rich Gannon discussed how often he has sat down in pre-broadcast meetings with CBS’s offensive staff and heard them discuss how they’re rolling with a backup or inexperienced quarterback. At that point, there is a shift in conversation to how “there’s a backup plan in place,” which is code for cutting back on offense, constricting the playbook, or requiring 30 runs to keep their quarterback safe.
Gannon stated that with Mayfield, that is not required since he is simply competent at doing everything. That gives the Bucs coaches a great deal of comfort and makes Mayfield a wonderful addition.
According to Gannon, Mayfield has shown enough in the NFL to earn the respect of the Bucs receivers and the huddle from the start, so the coaches won’t stress about him.
Although Mayfield seems like a “stop-gap” and has “physical limitations,” Gannon claimed that he is still capable of leading a team to a winning record.
Joe is excited to explore every aspect of the Mayfield experience. However, Gannon’s perspective actually makes Joe a little uneasy. Joe isn’t content with a quarterback who can just lead the Bucs to eight or nine victories. That’s a terrific way to have years of unhappiness.
